Stiga Killarney Junior Open

Killarney Table Tennis Club's junior players had a successful and enjoyable day at the Killarney Junior Open on Saturday, 29 October. Without doubt, the star of the day was brilliant Brielle Brady. In the U17 Girls' competition, Brielle had a spectacular win over number 1 seed, Aisling Healing, in a thrilling nail-biting 5 set match to book a place in the final, causing shockwaves in the Munster camp.

Brielle went on to beat Chloe O'Halloran in the final and gain her first U17 title. Our Killarney girls dominated the U14 Girls' competition, with Valentina taking first place, Lynn coming second and Brielle third. In the U12 Girls, Devon claimed second place.

The Killarney boys also put in some great performances with our two youngest players, Nykyta and Mathew coming second and fourth respectively in the U10 Boys.

In the U12 Boys, Nykyta finished in 6th place and Mathew was third in the U12 Plate event. Roman was on top form and reached U14 Boys Final where he played Gearoid.

The match went to five sets and was eventually won by Gearoid, but could easily have gone either way.

Eoin also played well and finished 9th in both the U14 and U17 Boys. Michael demonstrated that he is recovering his form by finishing third in U17 Boys and Roman reached the quarter-finals and finished in seventh place.

The competition was extremely well organised, thanks to the hard work of Paul, Jana and Anthony, both before and during the competition. Indeed, several of the adults present commented on how smoothly and efficiently the competition went. Well done to everybody and roll on the Munster Open!

KTTC Training

Monday night training has become busier than ever in recent weeks with the recent addition of some girls from the Mercy school and a great influx of adult playerws.  At present the club is maxed out on this night and we have 15 tables going non stop for the entire night.

The club intends to train through the summer and will only take maybe 2 weeks off in July.  There will be a camp for all players in August this year which will gear us up for the coming season.

The Friday night training session will start to have some additional players filtered through to it to encourage some new fringe players.  All experienced players are asked to encourage the new players along and treat them with respect.  Remembering of course that we all started somewhere and you have all got to where you are now with thanks to Killarney Table Tennis Club.

Number 1 in Ireland

Valentina Puotkalyte has made it to the top of the under 12 girls rankings and currently ranked joint number 1.  Valentina had another fantastic tournament in Castlebar to follow up on her win in the Munster Open.  Valentina  was pipped at the post for first place, losing out in the 5th set.  A little known disadvantage for Valentina in the final was the fact that before the final she had misplaced her bat and actually played the entire match with a clubmates bat.  As most people know the importance of playing with one's own bat is paramount and who knows if she would have settled for second place had she of played with her own bat.  Well done Valentina

Connaught Junior Open

At the Connaught Junior Open in Castlebar over the weekend, Killarney TTC was proudly represented by 10 of our players.

Competing in their main age groups, all players were able to come out of their groups to enter the second round; which in itself speaks for the overall improvement of the clubs playing standard. It was particularly rewarding to see Clare, Courtney, Eoin and Bogdan doing so well – as they still have little experience on National level. Some then met with very tough matches in the following rounds, nonetheless gaining important experience and plenty of good match practise along the way.

However, the most outstanding success for Killarney was the girls U12 event, where we had five girls (Devon, Clare, Brielle, Kerry and Valentina) through to the last 16, with Valentina eventually claiming second place after a tight 5-set final.

*NP*

Kerry coming in 4th overall, which is a fantastic result considering she has only very recently returned to training after a couple of months illness; and Brielle coming in 7th place.

Most players then went on to compete in a second event which was to be seen as gaining experience and practice with older and more seasoned players from all over Ireland – and proved to be a confidence booster for all – Brielle won the U14 Plate; and Lynn took Ulster by storm in the U17’s, eliminating Annalies Walker from the first round, beating her 3-0. Roman held his own confidently, getting through the first round U17, making himself known to become a promising contender in future seasons.

A huge congratulations goes out to all our players, who contested fantastic matches, took some amazing points and sets off much favoured players, and worked very hard over a tough and long weekend.

*NP*

Killarney TTC is now firmly on the National Table Tennis map, and the players are by now well respected among their peers.

The social highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night out in Castlebar, where we took all the kids for a lovely meal, and had a Bowling competition which proved that some of us should definitely stick with the smaller ball and bat ;) Every single one of our kids was an absolute pleasure to have around for the weekend, great fun and very easy “maintenance”.

Thank you to Anthony, who did an amazing job getting around coaching all the players as best he could; as well as driving to and from Mayo and delivering our charges safe and sound to their front doors.

Thank you to Paul for organising the entries, accommodation, providing the car, and generally always being just a phone call away.
